Applications may be submitted anytime beforehand, but will be considered in a concerted selection process after the posted deadline. Results can be expected early in the New Year 2011.

The application deadline for uptake in the Winter Semester 2011/12 (October) is 29 April 2011.

What is the aim of the Graduate School?

The Saarbrücken Graduate School of Computer Science provides an optimal environment for pursuing doctoral studies in computer science at an internationally competitive level. As a student, you undergo research oriented training and experience a stimulating and scientifically challenging atmosphere. Advised by internationally renowned scientists, you can participate in one of the many research groups and find your way into top notch research.

Who can apply?

Talented students with strong interest in research who hold a Masters or an excellent Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or in a related field.
[At the time of application the degree need not be conferred yet.]

What is the working language?

All courses, exams, etc. are in English.

How does it work?

After your successful application, you first undergo (depending on your degree) a three semester preparatory phase which consists of research oriented, broad course work adjusted to personal interests. We provide common office space particularly to students in this phase. You have ample opportunity to acquaint yourself with the many computer science research groups in Saarbrücken and to choose a group and an advisor matching your interest.

After passing a qualifying exam, you enter the research and dissertation phase which you spend as a member of a research group. During the entire program there is a comprehensive offering of so-called Soft Skills seminars and courses.

In justified cases, you can be exempted from parts of or even the entire preparatory phase. Also, your courses taken in the preparatory phase can be used towards a Master’s degree, if this is desired.

Can I obtain financial support?

We provide financial support during both phases (of course assuming adequate progress). During the preparatory phase starting after your BSc degree, this support comes in the form of scholarships (800 € per month) or teaching and research support contracts. During the research and dissertation phase, you are supported in the form of stipends (about 1400 € per month) or of research or teaching assistantships.

There are currently no tuition fees, only a student fee of 140 € per semester which gives you free access to public transportation and reduced student rates at the university cafeteria and for many other public services (museums, concerts).

Which are the participating research institutes?

All these institutes are housed right next to each other on the Saarland University campus in Saarbrücken, an unparalleled concentration of computer science research expertise in Europe.

How can I apply?

We ask for the following materials

  • CV
  • transcript of all academic records, including all university and high school diplomas (please provide certified English, German or French translations, if your documents are in another language)
  • a brief statement explaining your motivation for pursuing a doctorate in computer science
  • 2 letters of recommendation (to be sent to us directly by the referees, as prompted by the OAS * please note that only official affiliation e-mail addresses will be considered valid)
  • if available, TOEFL scores, or equivalent record of English proficiency (TSE, Cambridge Certificate scores), otherwise a short statement with respect to your English qualifications. (Please keep in mind that very good understanding of English will be essential for your success.)
  • if available, GRE scores

To be considered for the next round of admissions, your complete application materials must reach us by 28 October 2010. Deadline closed!

Next deadline: 29 April 2011 for uptake in the Winter Semester 2011/12 (October).

Music Scholarship Award, University of Reading, UK

Posted by Zul Rianto 6:07 PM, under | No comments

The Music Scholarships are awarded for ability in musical performance, judged on the basis of auditions to be held at the University, annually in April. The auditions are adjudicated by a panel normally consisting of the University’s Director of Music, a member of the Institute of Education responsible for teaching in music, and others nominated by the Director of Music.

Vocal awards are offered for all voices (soprano, alto (male or female), tenor, baritone, bass). In the audition candidates will be expected to sight read and may be given aural tests. Fluency in reading conventional notation is normally expected. They will also be required to sing two contrasting pieces totalling no more than 10 minutes. Repertoire does not have to be classical, but the contrast is important. Accompaniment will be provided if required. The audition will include a short discussion of the candidate’s musical background and aims.

Instrumental awards are offered for all instruments. Grade VII or VIII of the Associated Board, where this is appropriate, will be regarded as the normal minimum level of attainment by candidates. In the audition candidates will be required to perform two contrasting pieces of their own choice, totalling not more than ten minutes. Repertoire does not have to be classical, but the contrast is important. Accompaniment will be provided if required. They will also be examined in sight reading. Candidates offering piano or organ will also be expected to sight read from a choral score and to accompany voices or instruments if required. The audition will include a short discussion of the candidate’s musical background and aims.

Those students holding vocal awards will be required to sing in both the University Chamber Choir and the University Chorus, to take singing lessons, and generally to participate in the University’s choral activities.

Those students holding instrumental awards will be required to play in the University Symphony Orchestra and the University Chamber Orchestra, the University Brass Band or other University ensembles as appropriate. Also to participate in and initiate chamber music, to take instrumental lessons, and generally to participate in the University’s instrumental activities. Those holding the keyboard scholarship shall be required to accompany choral rehearsals and to deputise from time to time for the Chorus pianist. Keyboard scholars shall also be given opportunities from time to time to conduct and coach.

Singers and instrumentalists from other traditions will be required to develop a programme which demonstrates their commitment and contribution to the musical life of the University.

All scholars shall be required to perform at least once annually in a university Lunchtime Concert.

The value of the Scholarship Award will be £800. The maximum duration of a Scholarship will be the same as the academic course for which the candidate is applying. Each Scholarship will be reviewed annually by the Director of Music. Scholarships may be withdrawn if the terms are not fulfilled. Students whose course requires them to be absent from the University for a whole year, or who withdraw temporarily from the University for a whole term or more, will not continue to hold their Scholarship during that period, but will be eligible for re-election to a Scholarship upon their return to full-time study in the University.

We have also created the award of an Exhibition; the value of which is £400 per year. The regulations governing Exhibitions are the same as those for Scholarships.

Deadline for applications: Friday 25 March 2011
Auditions: Wednesday 27 – Thursday 28 April 2011

Applications made after the closing date may be considered at the discretion of the University’s Director of Music. There is no charge for competing, and no expenses will be offered by the University to competing candidates.

Every candidate to whom a Scholarship is offered must accept or decline the offer within two weeks from receipt of the offer.

Doctoral Studies Scholarship in Aquatic Ecology at University of Lund

Posted by Zul Rianto 5:20 PM, under | No comments

The aim of the research project is to identify the barriers to dispersal in a microalgal species that forms blooms in freshwater lakes. This research has implications for the understanding of the dispersal of microalgae and microorganisms in general, as well as for predicting the occurrence of new algal blooms. The approach is to determine the importance of physical versus biological dispersal barriers by analyzing the genetic diversity patterns. The current hypothesis is that physical dispersal barriers are important for generating genetic differentiation. Instead, differentiation among microalgal populations might be explained by so called founder effects. Founder effects refer to the dominance of strains or species that arrive first to a new habitat. In laboratory and mesocosm experiments, priority effects and invasion sequence will be investigated in the algal species Gonyostomum semen.

The position will be based at the unit of Aquatic Ecology, Department of Biology, Lund University, in southern Sweden. The PhD project is a part of a larger project financed by Formas (The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences, and Spatial Planning), and will involve collaboration with other PhD students and a group at Gothenburg University (Ass. Prof. Anna Godhe). The project is suitable for applicants who would like to combine ecology and population genetics with molecular biological tools. The practical work will include PCR-based techniques, analyses of population genetic data, algal culturing, and microscopy. Experimental work will be performed both in the laboratory and in the field. In addition, the PhD student will be able to join the Research School in Genomic Ecology (GENECO) in Lund. This program will give access to a network of other PhD students and researchers in genomic ecology, annual meetings, workshops, travel grants to visit other institutions, as well as a career mentor.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Requirements for this position are an MSc or comparable degree in ecology preferably with an aquatic and/or molecular ecological specialization. The successful candidate will have very good experience in molecular techniques. A driver’s license is required, as is very good knowledge of written and spoken English.

Application Deadline: February 06, 2011

Huygens Scholarship Programme, Nuffic, Netherlands

Posted by Zul Rianto 5:14 PM, under | No comments

The prestigious Huygens Scholarship Programme is open to excellent students from all countries. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies.

The Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science has allocated seven million euros for excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the Huygens Scholarship Programme. There is no fixed number of available scholarships. The actual number is determined by the total cost of the variable components of the scholarships.

PhD applications can only be accepted from excellent students with the Icelandic, Macedonian, Chinese, Croatian or Turkish nationality. Furthermore, the minister has allocated part of the total budget for excellent students following programmes in Dutch language and literature, or Neerlandistiek.

The Huygens Scholarship Programme is highly competitive. To illustrate this: for the 2011 scholarship round it is expected that out of approximately 1,700 applications only 150 candidates will be awarded a scholarship.

Eligibility requirements
If you want to take part in the Huygens Scholarship Programme, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are an excellent student: you have obtained excellent results in all your previous studies and you are at least in the top 5% of students in your study or research programme. Please show this in your application file by including, for example, grade lists or reference letters. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications which show that you are among the top 5%.
  • The Dutch study programme should be registered in CROHO, the Central Register of Higher Education Programmes. You can find this information in the Dutch nomination letter provided by the Dutch host institution.
  • You should be in the final phase of your bachelor’s studies, or studying towards a master’s degree in the Netherlands, and your study must be used to earn a degree at the Dutch institution.
  • Scholarships are only awarded for studies lasting at least 6 months, but no longer than 24 months. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications for 12 to 24 months.
  • Your studies or research in the Netherlands must constitute a deepening and broadening of your previous studies.
  • If you are already a graduate, you must have graduated less than one year ago.
  • It is possible to do research or practical training, but it must form part of your studies (a programme on the CROHO list), i.e. you must receive study credits for it. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications for study programmes.
  • At the start of the academic year (1 September) in which you study in the Netherlands, you must be no older than 35 years of age. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to a younger candidate.
  • You must have already attended a programme of education (e.g. high school or above) in a country outside the Netherlands.

Your Huygens application must include:

  • a signed printout of the digital application form (required document);
  • your personal Huygens nomination letter 2011 (required document);
  • your curriculum vitae;
  • copies of relevant diplomas, certificates and transcripts;
  • a reasoned account of your motivation for wanting to study or do research in the Netherlands (about one side of an A4-sized sheet);
