The Research Training Group 1023 „Identification in Mathematical Models: Synergy of Stochastic and Numerical Methods“ at the University of Göttingen invites applications for an immediately available 3-year (= 2-year + option for 1-year extension) PhD Position (Doktorandenstipendium/ DFG-scholarship).

The focus of our Biometrics research group (www.stochastik.math.uni-goettingen.de) at the Institute for Mathematical Stochastics (IMS) is on the development of novel models and methods for fingerprint recognition. Dissertation projects can interdisciplinary combine the potentials of stochastics, statistics, numerics and computer science for providing new solutions to exciting challenges in the coinciding areas of biometrics, pattern recognition and image processing.

Essential qualifications are a master degree, diploma or a comparable degree in mathematics, computer science or a related scientific field.

Preferred:

• Good skills in written and spoken English
• Programming skills (e.g. Java, C++, Matlab, R)
• Experience in mathematical or statistical imaging

Background in geometry, pattern recognition or image processing is advantageous. We expect creativity and independence, the ability to work and communicate within a team of scientists from different disciplines.

The scholarship of the DFG Research Training Group 1023 are based on the support rate granted by the DFG and amount to EUR 1365,- per month with a monthly supplement of EUR 103,-.

UN University Spring 2011 Building Resilience to Climate Change Courses, Japan

The United Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP), Tokyo, invites applications for the new intensive 4-week postgraduate programme on "Building Resilience to Climate Change" developed under the framework of the University Network for Climate and Ecosystems Change Adaptation Research (UN-CECAR). The new courses, conducted at UNU-ISP, cover a range of issues on sustainability and adaptation to climate and ecosystems change. Topics include:

• climate and atmospheric science
• impacts assessment
• climate and society
• ecosystems resilience
• risk and uncertainty
• integrated solutions for mitigation and adaptation
• community-based adaptation strategies

Students also will receive practical training in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing software.

FELLOWSHIPS
A limited number of fellowships (covering tuition fees and living expenses) are available for outstanding students from developing countries and who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance. All students are expected to pay for their own travel expenses to and from Tokyo.

The programme is open to Master`s and Ph.D students who are currently enrolled in a university postgraduate programme and who have already identified their thesis topic prior to arriving in Japan.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship in Language and Communication Technologies for Overseas and non-overseas applicants

The Erasmus Mundus European Masters Program in Language and Communication Technologies (LCT) is designed to meet the demands of industry and research in a rapidly growing area. It offers education and training opportunities for the next generations of leaders in research and innovation. It provides students with profound knowledge and insight into the various disciplines that contribute to the methods of language and communication technologies and it strengthens their ability to work according to scientific methods. Moreover, the students acquire practice-oriented knowledge by choosing appropriate combinations of modules in Language Technology, Computational and Theoretical Linguistics, and Computer Science.

It involves studying one year at one of the Universities of the consortium, and completing the second year with a stay in one of the partner Universities. After this, the student will obtain two already approved Master of Science/Arts degrees with legal value in the countries of issue.

The amount of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship for students beginning in 2010 is 24,000 Euros per student per year for overseas students and aproximately 10,000 Euros per student per year for non-overseas students. The application for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship is done through the Application Form of the LCT Masters Program, that is, when you apply to the EM LCT program, you are simultaneously applying for the scholarship.

Application procedure and deadlines
Complete applications are due for both, overseas and non-overseas applicants on January 17th, 2011 (new deadline).

Non-overseas applicants are defined as nationals of an EU member state, an EEA-EFTA state (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) or other nationals who have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.
Overseas applicants are all others.
